Date Posted: 2026-07-28
Experience Level: Mid-Senior Level (3-5 years)
Remote Status: Hybrid
๐ Role Summary
-
Lead end-to-end product design initiatives, from problem framing through to shipped and measured solutions, within cross-functional squads.
-
Drive user research methodologies, including user interviews, JTBD analysis, and journey mapping, to inform design direction and product iteration.
-
Innovate and design AI-driven features, considering prompts, fallbacks, and human-in-the-loop interactions, while anticipating the evolution of interface paradigms.
-
Contribute to and advocate for the IFS design system, ensuring consistency and reusability of components and patterns across the product suite.
-
Champion accessibility (WCAG 2.1+) and design for real-world scenarios, including edge cases and error states, to ensure a robust user experience.
๐ Enhancement Note: This role is positioned as "Principal" indicating a significant level of autonomy, strategic influence, and potential mentorship responsibilities within the design team, especially concerning future-facing technologies like AI. The focus on "designing for people whose work actually matters" and the hard problems in IFS's core industries (field service, asset management, manufacturing, supply chain) suggests a need for deep empathy and a pragmatic, results-oriented approach to design.
๐ Primary Responsibilities
-
Own the complete design process for defined feature areas, translating intricate user needs and business objectives into production-ready design artifacts in Figma.
-
Collaborate closely with product managers and engineers in agile, cross-functional squads to make critical design decisions and drive product development.
-
Articulate and defend design choices through compelling presentations to stakeholders, backed by robust research, data, and a clear rationale.
-
Independently plan, execute, and synthesize user research, including interviews and Jobs-to-Be-Done (JTBD) analysis, to generate actionable design insights and strategic direction.
-
Integrate quantitative data signals (e.g., task success rates, usage metrics) with qualitative findings to iteratively refine and improve user experiences.
-
Design and implement AI-driven features, carefully considering user interaction with AI, potential risks, and opportunities for human oversight.
-
Proactively explore and advocate for future interface paradigms, considering the impact of emerging technologies like ambient computing and voice on enterprise software.
-
Contribute to the evolution of the IFS design system by proposing and developing reusable components and patterns that enhance design efficiency and consistency.
-
Ensure all designs meet WCAG 2.1+ accessibility standards, prioritizing inclusive design practices from the outset.
-
Design for robustness by considering edge cases, error states, and the variability of real-world data, moving beyond idealized "happy path" scenarios.
๐ Enhancement Note: The responsibilities highlight a blend of strategic thinking (future interface paradigms, AI integration) and tactical execution (Figma, design system contribution, accessibility). The emphasis on "making real decisions rather than executing on someone else's brief" suggests a high degree of autonomy and ownership expected from the Principal Product Designer.
๐ Skills & Qualifications
Education: While no specific degree is mandated, a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Design (e.g., Interaction Design, Graphic Design, HCI), Computer Science, or a related field is often preferred for Principal-level roles. A strong portfolio demonstrating equivalent practical experience is paramount.
Experience: A minimum of three years of end-to-end product design experience, encompassing discovery, research, design, and successful
Application Requirements
Candidates must have at least three years of end-to-end product design experience and proficiency in Figma. You should be capable of independently planning research, making data-informed design decisions, and designing for complex enterprise environments.
