Staff Product Designer
๐ Job Overview
Job Title: Staff Product Designer
Company: Instrumentl
Location: Remote - Canada, Remote - USA
Job Type: Full-time
Category: Product Design / GTM Operations
Date Posted: 2026-09-02
Experience Level: 10+ years
Remote Status: Fully Remote
๐ Role Summary
-
This role is focused on the strategic design of Instrumentl's foundational "GrantOS" platform, encompassing its data, core functionalities, and enterprise integrations, requiring a deep understanding of systems thinking and user experience architecture.
-
You will be responsible for defining and establishing the core interaction patterns, data models, and permission structures that will serve as the design system foundation for all subsequent product development.
-
The position involves significant "zero to one" product development, where you will be instrumental in defining problems, framing opportunities, and setting roadmap direction in nascent product areas, often with incomplete information.
-
A key aspect of this role is driving user research end-to-end, synthesizing ambiguous user needs into clear product direction, and influencing cross-functional teams (Product, Engineering, GTM) to align on strategic design initiatives.
๐ Enhancement Note: While the title is "Staff Product Designer," the responsibilities and focus on foundational platform design, data models, permissions, and integration surfaces indicate a strong overlap with Revenue Operations (RevOps) and GTM Operations principles, particularly in how product architecture influences operational efficiency, data integrity, and cross-functional workflow enablement. The emphasis on defining systems that other teams inherit is a core tenet of operational strategy.
๐ Primary Responsibilities
-
Own the end-to-end product design lifecycle for GrantOS, including platform, core functionalities, and enterprise surfaces, from initial discovery and research through to launch and iterative improvements.
-
Define and document critical platform components such as data relationships, robust permission models, and seamless integration surfaces that underpin all product workflows.
-
Establish and evolve the core interaction patterns and design system foundations that will be inherited and utilized by all other product design teams and pods.
-
Design and implement mechanisms for work and data to flow cohesively across different product pods, ensuring that changes in one area enhance, rather than impede, functionality in others.
-
Lead the definition and strategic direction for entirely new, greenfield product spaces where problem definition and optimal solutions are not yet established.
-
Collaborate closely with Product Managers to write product briefs, frame complex problems, and set strategic roadmap direction for new initiatives.
-
Make sound product design decisions with incomplete information, prioritizing and sequencing work to enable rapid learning and iteration for the development team.
-
Shape the user experience for how grant professionals manage critical tasks, reporting, and integrations throughout the entire grant lifecycle.
-
Conduct comprehensive user research, including participant recruitment, interview execution, and synthesis of findings into actionable product design strategies.
-
Actively contribute a strong point of view in design discussions, advocating for user needs and pushing back on designs that do not align with user-centric principles.
-
Align engineering, product, and Go-To-Market (GTM) teams on strategic design direction, ensuring buy-in and understanding at all organizational levels.
-
Elevate the overall quality bar for design within the team and provide mentorship and coaching to fellow designers.
๐ Enhancement Note: The responsibilities clearly highlight the strategic, systems-level thinking required, which is paramount in operations roles. Defining "data relationships, permission models, and integration surfaces" directly impacts how sales, marketing, and customer success operations function. The "zero to one" aspect and influencing roadmap direction are also critical for operations leaders who often identify and champion new process or system implementations.
๐ Skills & Qualifications
Education: While no specific degree is listed, a Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, or a related field is often implied for senior design roles. Equivalent practical experience will also be strongly considered.
Experience:
-
Minimum of 10 years of progressive product design experience, with a significant portion spent in Staff or Principal Product Designer roles.
-
Demonstrated experience owning entire product domains, rather than just specific features within them.
-
Proven track record of end-to-end ownership of a platform or core product area within complex B2B or enterprise SaaS environments.
-
Direct experience designing and shipping net-new product initiatives, particularly in 0-to-1 scenarios where you were involved in problem definition.
-
Deep, hands-on involvement in all phases of user research, from planning and participant recruitment to synthesis and translation into product decisions.
-
Experience designing product surfaces that incorporate agentic capabilities or Artificial Intelligence (AI). Required Skills:
-
Platform Design: Expertise in designing complex platform architectures, including data models, permission systems, and integration surfaces for B2B/enterprise SaaS.
-
Systems Thinking: Ability to understand and design intricate systems where components interact and influence each other, crucial for operational workflows.
-
User Research & Synthesis: Proficiency in conducting end-to-end user research and translating ambiguous user needs into clear, actionable product strategies.
-
Interaction Design: Strong skills in defining intuitive and efficient interaction patterns for complex applications.
-
Design Systems: Experience in contributing to or defining foundational elements of design systems that are inherited by other teams.
-
0-to-1 Product Development: Proven
Application Requirements
The role requires 10+ years of product design experience, specifically with ownership of complex B2B or enterprise SaaS platforms. Candidates must demonstrate deep involvement in user research and experience designing agentic or AI-powered product surfaces.
