Aro is a wellness app that helps people spend less time on their phones.
Aro is your go-to app for reducing screen time and creating meaningful presence, empowering you to focus, recharge, and enjoy life beyond the screen.
When Aro approached us, the app was already live — but it was facing a few critical challenges that were limiting its growth and impact.
Aro's users weren’t actively using the app or its features consistently.
Reliance on a physical box restricted the user base, limiting growth opportunities.
Users were unsure how to make the most of their screen-free time.
The app required the Aro box, preventing users from using the app outside their homes.
As their design partner, we were brought in to tackle these key experience and engagement issues — and help Aro evolve into a product users could connect with connect with again and again, wherever they are.
Before jumping into solutions, we ran an exploration workshop with Aro’s cross-functional team & stakeholders to go broad to narrow on the future experience.
We reimagined “going Aro” as something users could do anytime, anywhere — not just when near the box. The goal was to make the no-box flow feel just as intentional and satisfying.
We launched a new “Go Aro” button that starts a session when users flip their phone face down. A calming animation marked the transition into and out of screen-free time, recreating the feeling of placing the phone in the box.
This release also introduced our first version of tagging — letting users label their sessions with a purpose, laying the groundwork for what would later become the “Pillars of Digital Wellness.”
Users struggled to understand how and why to spend their screen-free time meaningfully. Without guidance, the app felt like a passive timer rather than a tool for mindful presence.
We developed four “Pillars of Digital Wellness” — Self-Care, Productivity, Family, and Community — after exploring several frameworks. These pillars distilled core areas of everyday life where phone use often disrupts balance.
Users needed a reason to keep showing up — something that made progress feel visible, motivating, and worth sharing.
We introduced day and night streaks, celebratory animations, and badges users could share with friends or on social media. These lightweight moments of recognition turned consistent presence into something users felt proud of.
Users could only see their household’s activity, limiting social accountability and engagement. We saw an opportunity to turn digital wellness into a shared journey.
We introduced Aro Circles — private groups where friends and family can view each other’s sessions, cheer each other on, and celebrate wins. Users can like, comment, and even challenge one another, creating light, friendly competition.
We transformed everyday milestones into shareable moments of celebration with our badge and achievement system. Users could collect and display badges for reaching goals and maintaining streaks.
One of the most exciting moments came after the launch of the badge feature. We saw immediate engagement from users, with over 6 badges shared per day across social platforms. The excitement was real! users loved the chance to celebrate their screen-free achievements and show them off socially, creating a powerful cycle where personal wins fueled community excitement and social recognition drove continued engagement. It wasn't just a feature, it became a community-driven motivator.
Aro needed a flexible design system that could seamlessly switch between light and dark modes, ensuring consistency across different themes without extra effort.
Color tokens were the ideal solution. By using tokens to define color values, we could assign specific colors to key UI elements based on their role, prominence, and interaction state. This approach made it easy to maintain consistent color schemes across light and dark modes, while saving time for design and development.
After our collaboration, Aro was acquired by ReclaimWell, a clear sign of the impact our work had. The acquisition highlighted the app’s growth and confirmed the value of the design changes we implemented.
